Human in and on the loop
Description
Volt4AI is designed for H2M (human-to-machine) operation with humans both in the loop (acting within automated decisions) and on the loop (supervising and able to intervene), keeping human oversight over AI behaviour.
Importance
Keeping humans in and on the loop is essential for accountable automation, especially for high-stakes decisions; approvals can be required and recorded. Volt mediates this through its identity and approval flow (Volt: Approve authenticate request).
Benefit
- Keeps human judgement and accountability over automated AI actions.
- Supports both direct human involvement and higher-level supervision.
Defence Relevance
The DTW targeting mission thread — sense, understand, decide, effect, assess — requires human judgement and accountability over lethal decisions even as AI accelerates the process. Human-in/on-the-loop operation keeps targeting decisions under human control while still benefiting from AI speed, supporting Challenge 3 (making decisions faster) responsibly. Policy-mediated control (see Dynamic) provides the enforcement point for that oversight.
Civilian & Enterprise Relevance
Regulated AI use — finance, healthcare, hiring — needs human oversight and auditable approval of automated decisions; supports EU AI Act human-oversight obligations and internal control frameworks.
