true end-to-end encryption, peer-to-peer, no intermediate server
Description
Volt4AI provides true end-to-end encryption between peers with no intermediate server, and data is encrypted at rest Volt: Fundamentals. Confidentiality is intrinsic to the architecture rather than dependent on trusting a broker or cloud relay — only the intended peers hold the keys to read the data. Key handling is covered in Volt: Key strategy.
Importance
Confidentiality that does not rely on trusting an intermediary is fundamental for sensitive data — there is no central server holding plaintext to breach, subpoena or misconfigure.
Benefit
- Only the intended peers can decrypt the data, in transit and at rest.
- No central server to compromise, and no third party with access to the cleartext.
- Privacy holds even when relaying through untrusted infrastructure.
Defence Relevance
Operating in zero-trust and contested environments requires data that stays confidential regardless of the transport or any intermediary. Peer-to-peer end-to-end encryption complements Volt’s data-centric security (see Signed) and supports DTW Cycle 0 criterion 3 (security of the API layer) and Challenge 1 (securely sourcing and sharing data between dispersed, siloed locations).
Civilian & Enterprise Relevance
Privacy-by-design for personal, health and financial data — confidential B2B exchange without exposing cleartext to a SaaS middleman, and a strong fit for GDPR/data-protection obligations. Useful wherever organisations must collaborate on sensitive data they are unwilling to centralise (healthcare records, legal, finance, IP-sensitive R&D).
