data-centric security
Description
Volt4AI applies data-centric security: protection travels with the data itself through signing, rather than relying solely on perimeter or transport controls. Each data item can be verified for integrity and origin wherever it goes.
Importance
When data moves between organisations and rests in many places, security must live with the data, not just the network perimeter. Volt encapsulates data in signed W3C Verifiable Credentials (Volt: Verifiable credentials).
Benefit
- Security survives when data leaves a trusted network or is stored at rest.
- Enables trust in distributed and offline settings where no perimeter exists.
Defence Relevance
Data-centric security is an explicit DTW strategic objective for a trusted, NATO-compliant data ecosystem. In Volt, data is encapsulated in W3C Verifiable Credentials carrying identity, provenance and optional encryption, independent of bearer and application protocol — so it stays secure when shared across dispersed, siloed locations (Challenge 1) and underpins criterion 3 (security of the API layer).
Civilian & Enterprise Relevance
Supports GDPR/data-protection, secure B2B data sharing and tamper-evident records across cloud and partner boundaries — data stays verifiable wherever it is copied or stored.
